Demonstration of 2nd generation bioethanol production WP1: Design and engineering

The project involves the final process design of a full-scale plant for continuous prodiction of second-generation bioethanol based on results from the IBUS pilot plant, where straw is the basic source of energy. The full-scale plant is intended to demonstrate synergies with power station operation, optimum use of by-products and a sustainable process.

Project description

This project funded under EFP07 II is the first part of a total project to develop, build and demonstrate 2. generation bioethanol production in Denmark. The four work packages in the total project are: WP1: Design and engineering of demonstration plant; WP2: Construction of demonstration plant; WP3: Commissioning and trial runs of demonstrations plant; WP4: Further development and improvements based on demonstration plant in operation. The work under work package 1 (WP1) was organized in four sub tasks: 1: Process development; 2: Mechanical equipment development; 3: Complete engineering of 4 t/h demonstration plant in Kalundborg; 4: Engineering of system integration with Asnees Power Plant and Statoil Refinery in Kalundborg. Under Process Development Inbicon optimized and verified all critical process steps in order to set up design specifications for the demonstration plant. Furthermore by-products were produced, analysed and tested to clarify the best use, and gather data for marketing of the products from the demonstration plant. The Mechanical development included expanding the existing pilot plant in Skærbæk, to make it possible to mechanically test all major processes. The work furthermore included rebuilding and capacity testing of Inbicons proprietary pretreatment equipment, to end up with detailed design and construction drawings for the Kalundborg Plant. Sub-task 3 and 4 included the total engineering work of going from Inbicons design specifications to the construction of a large-scale demonstration plant, including the integration with existing energy plants. The visual outcome of the work completed under WP1 can be seen at the newly inaugurated 2nd generation ethanol plant build by Inbicon next to Asnæs Power Plant in Kalundborg. The success factor for the work under WP1 was to verify the Inbicon process , make it possible to build the demonstration plant, and to get a positive investment decision from the board of DONG Energy
