Research and development center for wind turbine components

This project involved the first two phases in establishing a knowledge centre for wind turbine components. In the first phase, the knowledge centre was officially established, and it was decided that the first test facility was to be located at the Risø DTU, National Laboratory for Sustainable Energy and owned by the DTU. Centre activities are to be carried out through a partnership comprising the DTU, Aalborg University, the Danish Technology Institute and FORCE Technology. In the second phase, which took place simultaneously, conceptual design acitivities for the facilities of the Centre, were commenced; this includes a 1 MW test setup.

Project description

The project has the objective to establish an experimental research and development center for components used in wind turbines. The idea is to utilize the strong position the wind turbine supply industry has in Denmark to establish the experimental research and development center for wind turbine components. In the first phase of the project it is the plan to establish the legal framework for the experimental r&d center for component. Parallel to the legal analysis a process is started up to design a 200-300 kW drive train test rig. The results from the design process is planned to be used in the design of the full scale test rig for drivetrains. In the second phase of the project a detailed design process for the 200-300 kW drive train test rig starts up and the production of components to the test rig starts up. Futhermore the design process for the full scale test rig starts up. The industry and the universities are participants in the project. The project leader is the Danish Wind Turbine Manufactures Association (Vindmølleindustrien) and the scientific project leader is Risø DTU, the department for Wind Energy

Results
This project involved the two first phases in the establishment of a knowledge center for wind turbine components performing theoretical research and experimental testing within the area of wind turbine systems and components. Through these activities the centre will contribute to the continued technical as well as commercial development and improvement of the component suppliers and the wind industry, which is of outmost importance for sustaining Denmark's position as a wind power hub. The activities of the centre will include: theoretical and experimental research, education and training, innovation, verification and demonstration of wind turbine components and systems for wind turbines. The Centre will develop new knowledge, competences and test methods for design and verification of wind turbine components and wind turbine systems. The centre will be part of a network of research and test facilities in Denmark, that support all aspects in the development process of next generation wind turbines from idea to product. The centre will contribute to direct and indirect (parallel) commercial effects which are expected to be seen within the value chain (component suppliers and wind turbine manufacturers) both in strengthening existing companies and opportunities for the establishment of new companies. Some of the results of this project are the following: - Detailed design of a small scale drive train test facility (1MW) is carried out. - Modification of exciting buildings are completed so they can withstand the extreme dynamic loads from the test setup. - An office for controlling and monitoring the test is built in the existing building. - The construction and installation of a small scale (1MW) drive train and test facilities is almost completed. - Funding for the next phases in the establishment of the center is granted (EUDP application 63011-0064). The drive train test setup is expected to be fully functional this year and the planning of the first experiment on a complete drive train is started
