Fuel Cells to SINE

Dantherm Power has produced fuel cell systems as emergency power for a large national radio network for emergency preparedness communication. A total of 117 fuel cell systems have been produced on assembly line. They were installed and put into operation, and a number of advantages of the technology was demonstrated.

Project description

The purpose with the project is to demonstrate the advantages of using the fuel cell technology in connection with a specific power backup solution for a national project deploying an emergency radio communication network (SINE). The power backup solution based on the fuel cell technology immediately takes over the power supply to the radio equipment in case of power interruptions on the main power grid. This ensures a safe and continuous operation of the emergency radio communication network in critical situations where no electrical power is available. The power backup solution runs on hydrogen stored in standard pressure cylinders and since the power backup solutions only are operating in case of power interruptions or maintenance the hydrogen consumption is low. The typical technology used in power backup equipment is based on batteries and diesel gensets this causing some problems used in critical radio communications networks. Introduction of new technology often gives some unseen problems and difficulties because the new technology needs to compete with the conditions and premises based the traditional technology. For power backup solutions where the objective is to replace the batteries and diesel generators the following barriers needs to be cleared: - Safety using hydrogen stored in high pressure cylinders. - The infrastructure in using hydrogen cylinders at longer power outages. - Documentation of the reliability of the power backup solution. - Safety issues concerning the power backup solution. - Integration of the fuel cell based power backup solution in the radio base station cabinet. - Integration of the hydrogen cylinders in a separate enclosure in the radio base station cabinet
