Strong power BMS for industrial Li-ion batteries

The project included the development of a Battery Management System (BMS) to control the discharging and charging of each cell in a 20 cell 72 V Lithium-ion battery.

Project description

Development of a 72 volt / 20 Li-ion cells / 500 amp. BMS (Battery Management System) for big industrial batteries. For the use in electric and hybrid vehicles with a weight over 500 kg. The system will be used in electric / hybrid vehicles for transport of passengers, smaller commercial vehicles and internal industrial vehicles (Lifts, forklifts, small trucks and busses). The system will also be the natural choice when changing from lead-acid and NiCd batteries in electrical back-up systems in the building industri, UPS mobile back-up systems, mobilebase stations, and a lot of backup systems in hospitals, airports and other institutions, independent mobile power-systems for the fire brigade, rescue companies and military applications

Results

The BMS is used in electrical and hybrid vehicles and electrical scooters and was demonstrated in the hybrid car Buddy, in which the BMS controlled Li-ion batteries were integrated with a 4 kW fuel cell. This set-up allows the car to travel a distance of 320 km per charge and to reach a maximum speed of 85 km/h. Development of the BMS continues under the ERP project ENS 33033-0228, in which the management system will handle increased voltages.
