IEA wind, participation in annex 25 - International network for analysis of power systems with a large share of wind power
The partnership evaluated up-to-date knowledge in the area. Against this background, method guidelines will be prepared for assessing costs and advantages of integrating large wind energy shares in power systems.
The corporation in the IEA annex will consists of exchange of experiences and results with regard to the influence of wind power on the following power system issues: Balancing of production and consumption on different time scales: 1) Activation of primary (frequency activated) and secondary (minute) reserves; 2) Unit commitment and dispatch of power plants relatively to trade on the day-ahead market (hours-days); 3) Use of flexible consumption and electricity storages (seconds-minutes-hours) System adequacy i.e. the ability of the power system to sustain power supply in cxtreme situations. This is quantified using values as LOLP (loss of load probability). Analysis of system adequacy is used to determine the capacity value of wind turbines, which is an important parameter for the economy in wind turbine installation. Grid issues: adequacy and reliability of transmission network, distribution and transmission losses related to transmission of wind energy over long distances. Our contribution to IEA annex 25 will be based on input from other projects. Risø has coordinated the EU funded research project Wilmar. The purpose of Wilmar was development of modelling tools for analysis of the technical and economic consequences of increasing shares of wind power in liberalised electricity systems. WILMAR is followed by a new EU funded research project named SUPWIND, where the work with the Wilmar Planning tool will be continued focusing on the development of a version specifically aimed at Transmission system operators. Integration of wind power is easier if both the production and the consumption side become more flexible. The EU funded research project NIGHTWIND runs in the same period as the IEA annex and analyse and demonstrate the use of cooling houses to control the electricity consumption in a more flexible way. The project 'Characterisation of Vanadium batteries' investigates the use of electricity storage in power systems focusing on the use of a Vanadium redox flow battery as electricity storage. These projects will provide the input for our participation in the IEA annex
Annex 25 under IEA-Wind is an international partnership aimed at developing common methods for integrating large shares of wind power into power systems. The annex involves valuable exchange of knowledge, methods and experience between TSO researchers and experts. The partnership evaluated up-to-date knowledge in the area. Against this background, method guidelines will be prepared for assessing costs and advantages of integrating large wind energy shares in power systems.
