Market screening af natural gas reformers

Institut for Energiteknik

The project objective was to undertake a screening of commercial natural gas reformers to be used in combi-nation with low temperature PEM fuel cells in the power range 2-3 kWe.

Project description

The project objective is to make a screening of natural gas reformers available on the international market. A recently completed Danish research and development project focusing on natural gas reforming has identified a need to determine the availability and state-of-the-art of small scale natural gas reformers. There has been a rapid development in this technology over the past 18 months and an up-to-date overview is required to determine the next steps in the Danish research and development strategy. The results from this project will assist in determining the focus for the future Danish activities and in setting up ambitious and realistic targets

Results

The project was based on the experi-ence that Dantherm and AAU have in this area, publicly available information and new contacts. A total of 13 named suppliers were identified and divided into 3 segments in order to select the most promi-sing for further investigation. In the segment: Suppliers of flexible prototype reformers suitable for product customization the products from Catator and HyGear were selected for further investigation. In addition the reformers from Osaka Gas were found to be of interest because of a very low CO content of less than 1 ppm. Both Catator and HyGear confirmed the ability to deliver reformers in the size range of interest within 8 to 16 weeks after receipt of order. The cost for single units was around 200,000 DKK. At large quantities the cost was expected to be around 5000 DKK for a 2 kWe unit. It was not possible to get a confirmation that Mitsui and Co (manufacturer of the Osaka Gas reformer) is able to deliver a unit. Catator and HyGear are both interested in selling licenses to further develop and adapt their technology. In particular the reformer from Catator was found to be very suited for further customization
