Comparative assessment of hydrogen storage and international electricity trade for a Danish energy system with wind power and hydrogen/fuel cell technologies
The project built on the results of a 2001 hydrogen project which focused on hydrogen as an energy carrier in a purely Danish system. The perspectives of this project were extended to include the other Nordic countries and Germany.
Surplus electricity from wind power production that cannot be used directly to cover demand, may either be stored for tater use, or traded on the international electricity market. The project considers hydrogen storage, e.g. in underground caverns, for later use, e.g. in fuel cell vehicles. Alternatively, the surpluses may be traded on international markets such as the Nordic Power Pool, and deficits may be bought from neighbouring countries. Hourly time simulations of the future Danish electricity system will be made, using updated versions of existing software, in order to investigate the technical feasibility and economy of the options outlined. Technology updates will be made and the possibility of modifying rules for trade on the international markets will be investigated
Updated models were used for a scenario in which the energy requirements of the Nordic countries were covered by renewable energy from wind turbines, hydropower and biomass. The result is a robust system in which it seems likely that annual variations between the three types of RE production will be evened out while at the same time opening up for export of environmentally-friendly electricity to Germany
