3 kWE direct methanol fuel cell based power generator - Part A
The goal of the project was to develop and demonstrate a 3 kWe DMFC generator aimed for Uninterruptible Power Supply. How-ever, a detailed concept evaluation based on the present Danish DMFC stack and requirements for the physical dimensions of the UPS unit, showed that by changing the target of the project to support only 2 kVA UPS load it is feasible to realize 10 hours back-up system.
The project shall develop and demonstrate a DMFC generator module aimed at UPS applications and portable generator applications. The modular design will give the possibility to construct generators with a wide range of power and energy requirements. A 3kW DMFC generator will be constructed and tested for UPS applications. A major goal for the project will be to reduce the price level of DMFC generators and extend life time of DMFC stacks
A 2kVA DMFC based generator have therefore been constructed instead. A substantial effort has been done within this project on designing, developing, constructing and testing of the system. The DMFC generator has been integrated into standard sized cabinet 7U in a 19'' rack (31,124366cm3). Several of the system performance tests have not yet been accomplished due to late arrival of the cooler unit. The prototype DMFC generator has thus been tested without the right-dimensioned condenser. However, it was possible to verify that the power module design work, up to 100% of full load.
