Deammonification - substantial new biological energy saving method for nitrogen removal in industrial wastewater
The object of the project is to develop a new treatment process for nitrogen removal, primarily to be used in wastewater treatment in the industry. The deammonification process offers a substational reduction in energy consumption and thus reduces the emission of CO2 as compared to conventional processes.
Extention of existing project (EPF-journal nr. 1273/01-0013). The object is to show Anammox activity in suspended cultures, based on partly heterotrofic biomass. This includes production of granulate sludge on which the anammox microorganisms can be fixed
Further more this process will reduce the need for external carbon. Conventional nitrogen removal processes has a high energy consumption for aeration. This consumption will typically contribute with 70-80% of the total consumption in industrial treatment plants. The deammonfication process will in theory use only 1/5 of this. This has been shown in pilot plants using biofilm technology, and it is the object of the project to prove this using activated sludge technology. Different technologies using activated sludge and biofilm has been chosen for the project. After some initial practical problems it succeeded to establish nitritation (1s"t part of the process) in 2 of 3 pilot plants at CP-Kelco and in Herning Wastewater treatment plant. The anammox process (2"n"d part of the process) has been clearly observed in 2 pilot plants using biofilm. At the activated sludge plant at CP-Kelco it was possible in medio December to observe a nitrogen elimination based on anammox-processes. The process was very unstable and stopped several times. In the experiments was fount key figures for temperature, pH-value, substrate concentration as well as several other operational parameters. Models for process calculations has been formulated to be used for process optimizing and dimensioning
