DK-SOFC b long-term SOFC development

Afdelingen for Materialeforskning

The in the EFP 2002 project were related to the development of a 3G cell with a metal suport of ferritic stainless steel and with stability towards redox and thermal cycling.

Project description

The overall purpose with the Danish SOFC programme is to create the possibility for establishing a Danish production of energy saving and environmentally friendly electricity producing plant or part to this plant. On the basis of the results in the Danish SOFC programme and a considerable interest from the Danish industry a strategy has been made for the commercialisation of the SOFC-technology. The continuation of the DK-SOFC programme will be carried out in two lines, where the first lines, which is being financed through projects with for instance PSO support, is aiming for a solution of short term problems on its way towards demonstration experiments in Denmark of Danish cell- and stack technology. The other line, where this proposal represents the 4rd year of a planned lasting several years, is aiming towards maintenance of the long-term development and research. The work of this line is endeavoured to lower the operation temperature without at the same time increasing the area specific resistance, partly by improving the durability in form of better materials and components, partly by a understanding of the operation relevant mechanisms as essential condition for a coming technology breakthrough. An important part of the line in the project is the building up of know-how with related patents, which can ensure industrial co-operation partners an advantageous position in the future

Results

The project was carried out as a part of DK-SOFC. The DK-SOFC b line is targeted towards: 1) decrease of the operation temperature without increasing the area specific resistance, 2) increase of the robustness of the cell, 3) better understanding of mechanisms. The planned activities in the EFP 2002 project were related to the development of a 3G cell with a metal suport of ferritic stainless steel and with stability towards redox and thermal cycling. The work was carried out approximately as planned. Some significant results are: Methods for the fabrication of a 3G cell were identified and reasonably flat 2x2 cm half cells were made. Two patent applications were formulated
