Danish rep. 2001: IEA Bioenergy Agreement, Task 32 - Biomass combustion and co-firing

The project has included the Danish Representation in the Technical Committee for biomass Utilisation, task 32, Biomass Combustion and Cofiring during 2001. The Activity is referring to the IEA Bioenergy Agreement.

Project description

The project includes the participation as the Danish representative in the IEA Biomass combustion technical committee. IEA Bioenergy Agreement (Biomass Combustion) builds on the work programme of the previous Biomass Combustion Activity. Since combustion is well-established commercially and accounts for over 90% of the bioenergy conversion technologies in use, the scope of the work emphasises the expanded use of biomass combustion for heat and power generation, in close co-operation with industry. The objective of the Task in the period 2001 - 2003 is to stimulate the expansion of the production of bio-energy by the exchange of information on technical and non-technical experience with co-firing of biomass in existing power plants and with biomass combustion in stand alone medium scale CHP plants. A significant factor in the Task will be industrial participation and the interactions between IEA activities and between IEA and the European Union. Enhancement of the industrial participation will be realised by involvement of ExCo members in selection of Task members, based on national programs running. Interaction between IEA Bioenergy and IEA Coal Research, will be further intensified by continuing to perform joined activities between this Task and the Coal Combustion Science group of IEA Coal Research. Technical issues to be addressed are: 1) Co-firing: ash deposition, ash utilisation, NOx, corrosion, char combustion, pre-processing of biomass, resource assessment. 2) Combustion: ash utilisation, aerosol formation, NOx. Non-technical issues to be addressed are keys to successful projects, logistics and contracting, environmental constraints and legislation, acceptance by the public and financial incentives. The activities will be executed based on specific project descriptions to be endorsed by the ExCo

Results

The Activity is referring to the IEA Bioenergy Agreement. The scope of the work emphasises the expanded use of biomass combustion for heat and power production. Results from the co-operation have regularly been disseminated to a broad group of Danish professionals with specific interest in Bioenergy utilisation.
