Combustion control through on-line monitoring of fuel moisture content
The main objective is to achieve higher combustion efficiencies and lower environmental impacts of biofuelled boilers by improving process control to take into account variations of the moisture content of the fuel.
Particular attention is paid to grate combustion of wood chips, that have relatively high and varying moisture content. On-line determination of fuel moisture content will be performed by two different methods. One is based on microwave technology and will be installed in the fuel feeder. The second is an on-line 'estimator', which employs measurements of - at least - the water content and the oxygen content of the flue gas to estimate the fuel moisture content. The moisture content of manually sampled wood chips will be determined for comparison. Various control strategies will be tested that utilizes the information gained above about the moisture and energy content of the actual fuel. The emissions of CO, TOC, and unburned will be monitored during these tests
