DK Superconductors in the electric power industry 2001-2002

The goal of the project was to demonstrate a superconducting cable system under realistic conditions in the Danish energy sector. A High-Temperature Superconducting (HTS) cable system was developed in the period 1998-2000, and finalised in the spring og 2001.

Project description

The EPF programme DK Superledere i El-sektoren 2001-2002 will finalise the 30 m HTS cable installation project in Copenhagen. The goal of the project is to install and operate a complete HTS cable system, rated at 36 kV and 2 kArms, in the Danish electric network. The installation and operation is performed in a realistic environment in order to collect the experiences regarding establishing and operation of such a system. The installation will be the first of its kind in the world, and it will enable a realistic evaluation of the technology from the perspectives of the different participants: Department of Energy, Utilities, and Danish industry. In order to complete the first phase of technology development and demonstration in the research programme 'DK Superledere i El-sektoren', a 3-phase, 2 kA(rms), 36 kV, HTS cable system have been manufactured in the programme DK-Superledere i Elsektoren 1997-2000. The field demonstation of the cable has also been prepared and initiated and will be completed in this project covering year 2001-2002. The demonstration will be integrated into a substation and will include the following components: 1) HTS cable; 2) Terminations with transition to copper at room temperature; 3) Cooling system; 4) Monitoring and control; 5) Safety and protection system. The project includes installation, and operation during one year of a 30 meter long, 3-phase HTS cable system including cooling system and terminations. The operation period can be prolonged if found necessary. The cable system is installed in Amager Koblingsstation (AMK) so that the users on Amager have their electricity supply through the HTS cable. The milestones of this project are the following: 2001 HTS cable, 30 m, 36 kV 2 kA cable tested in the utility grid; 2002 Complete testing and demonstration. Final report. The utilities, the cable manufacturer, and the university partners will perform a joint evaluation of the demonstration project. The learning from the demonstration will be used to direct and select activities in the further technology development

Results

On the 28 May 2001, the system was commissioned at the Amager Sub Station (AMK) as the first one of its kind in the world. It was operated until the completion of the test period on 12 May 2003. In the start-up phase, the load was increased in conservative steps in order to build confidence with the operation personnel at Copenhagen Energy. The following are some of the main conclusions from the test period: 1) The cable and terminations operated satisfactory up to the maximum available load of 60 MVA; 2) The cooling system was not reliable enough for continuous operation in a utility environment; 3) The surveillance system was satisfactory for operation and protection, but can be enhanced for the purposes of service and analysis. In the test period of 17,135 h, the HTS cable system was cooled for 16,036 h and carrying load for 11,491 h. The system delivered 226 GWh of energy to approx. 50,000 customers on the island of Amager
