Highly insulalating glazing in multi-storey buildings, demonstration project, phase 1

Multi-openable glazed facade in a new multi-storey building. The purpose of this project was to demonstrate how new types of glazing and glazed areas can be incorporated in a new multi-storey building and how new facade expressions as well as good spatial and light effects can be achieved.

Project description

The purpose of this project is to analyse and design a highly insulated multi-storey building, which is going to be built in Vanløse with Boje Lundgaard og Lene Tranberg as architects and Fællesadministrationen 3B as client. 24 dwellings will be built with the south facade designed as a multi-opening facade systems with multi-folding doors with low-energy glazing. The project builds on experience gained from 'Highly insulating glazing in new multi-storey buildings'. The energy is targeted at 30% lower than the existing requirements stipulated in BR95 and this corresponds to the requirements expected in the future Danish Building Regulations. This reduction must accommodate good architecture and daylight conditions as well as acceptable indoor climate also on warm days in the summertime. In phase 1 calculations will be made to assess the energy, ventilation and indoor climate conditions in the actual building. Phase 2 will include questionnaires and interviews with the occupants and measurements will be performed and show if the building fulfils the expectations

Results

From mid-2002 to mid-2003 a multi-storey building project was built in Copenhagen, Denmark. The project was designed by the architectural firm of Lundgard & Tranberg A/S. The building project comprised 24 apartments distributed on 4 floors. A major part of the facades are made of glass, especially facades orientated toward southeast and southwest. A newly developed multi-openable facade system is used which consisted of highly insulating multi-folding doors that makes it possible to open the whole, or major parts, of the facade. This enables a more varied and unconventional use of the dwelling by opening of the folding doors, a use that follows the user patterns known from conservatories, glass extensions and balconies. It creates great spaciousness and flexibility. Double-glazed low-emissivity glazing with a centre U-value of 1.1 W/m2 K and solar heat transmittance of 0.63 was used. Other structures just met the requirements of the Danish Building Regulations. The insulation level of the thermal envelope was selected for reasons of economy, i.e. the building costs. Calculations of the heat demand showed that by using this type of glazing, it was possible to reduce heat consumption by approximately 15% compared with the Danish Building Regulation requirements. Further insulation of the thermal envelope will enable additional reduction of the energy consumption by 25-30% as targeted in the Danish Energy Plan 'Energi 21' (Miljø- og Energiministeriet, 1996). Calculations of temperature conditions showed that it would be possible to keep the indoor temperature at an acceptable level by means of efficient solar shading and natural ventilation
