Modelling of char beds

Institut for Energiteknik

The purpose of this project was to improve our understanding of the characteristics and behaviour of char beds both in steady and unsteady operation. The knowledge gained is to be used for optimization of the design and extrapolation to larger units such as pilot plants and production plants.

Results

The project has consisted of the establishment of a series of mathematical descriptions of char beds, starting with relatively simple steady models, to models of increasing complexity including unsteady effects, gas-solid heat exchange and reaction kinetics of wood and char. The project has reached the intended objectives: The knowledge gained by establishing these models constitutes a sound foundation upon which futher modelling activities can be based. Application of the model has lead to a number of concrete results including a novel control strategy for the gasifier. The experimental data on the kinetics of wood gasification are unique and contribute importantly to the basic knowledge in the field
