Hydrogen vehicle based on PEM fuel cell

The objectives of the project have been to design and construct a PEM fuel cell driven car, which can be used for demonstration of hydrogen as a fuel in the transport sector. The project has been based on Fiat's Seicentio Elettra electric vehicle.

Project description

The objectives of the project are to design, construct and demonstrate a fuel cell driven electrical hybrid car. The car is intended for demonstrating hydrogen as a fuel in the transport sector. The hybrid car with the fuel cell stack are being constructed in collaboration with Centro Ricerche Fiat (CRF), Italy and De Nora, Italy. The hybrid car is based on Fiats Seicento Elettra which has been in production since 1998 and the fuel cell stack incorporates De Nora's newest available PEM fuel cell technology. The further developed of the car will be based on a Danish development fuel cell power unit and commercial available components integrated into a modular construction. The hybrid car will function as a laboratory where components and modules in the future can be upgrated with improved versions. Danish industry gets in this way an opportunity to develop and test products for the future car technology. Two hybrid cars will be made, one for Fiat and one for IRD. The car will be tested in the laboartory and demonstrated on a test track

Results

IRD (DK) and Centro Ricerche Fiat (I) have performed the design, construction and incorporation of fuel cell system into the Seicento Elettra in collaboration. The cars are constructed partly from commercial available components and partly on components developed during the project. The main components of the PEM fuel cell driven car are: 5 kW PEM fuel cell stack from de Nora supplying 90 A at 56 V and #eta# = 57%; 0.9 kg hydrogen storage constructed by IRD; 5 kW step-up converter constructed by IRD; 6.2 kWh lead acid battery supplied by CRF; 15 kW electric motor supplied by CFR. All components have been integrated in the cars. The action radius of the cars is expected to be 135 km under urban drive conditions. The PEM fuel cell system alone gives 90 km. The cars will be tested and demonstrated in the next project
