Calorimetric measurement of power loss between 30 W and 1.5 kW

The purpose of the project is to implement, test and verify a calorimetric measuring system for accurate measurement of power losses in the range of 30 to 1500 W, enabling measuring of rotating electric machines.

Project description

The project is an extension of a previous ERP (Energy Research Programme) project, 1253/97-0009, with focus on the development of a measurement method and its implementation in a measuring system for the power range of up to 50 W; however, no test of rotating electric machines is carried out. A main purpose of the project is also to carry out a systematic verification of the characteristics and accuracies of both measuring systems, and to compare the results to results obtained using electrical Power Analysers. Therefore, measurements will be performed on various applications in cooperation with three companies (ABB Motors A/S, Danfoss A/S and Grundfos A/S). Several measurement results will be obtained immediately and a base of experience will be provided in measuring techniques, which will be valuable when performing future measurements for industrial companies and research projects, for example. Measurements made using the Power Analyser may be performed simultaneously to evaluate the characteristics and limitations for future applications of these instruments. In total, it is the purpose and expectation of this project that the measuring systems can contribute to the design of better energy apparatus and systems in future; first and foremost on the basis of improved knowledge of loss conditions in the apparatus
