Windows with solar cells, regulation of solar energy and heat exchange

The aim of the project was to develop energy efficient, climate sensitive window technology

Results

The window should have the functionalities: 1. Integrated solar cell power supply. 2. Regulation of passive solar energy. 3. Regulation of daylighting. 4. Avoiding/removing condensation on external surfaces. 5. Removal of excess-heat through automatic opening and closing of the pane. 6. Built-in ventilation with heat-exchange. 7. Pre-heating of ventilation air. The project succeeded in the first 5 goals, while the last did not prove commercially attractive, as the demand for storage of electrical power, as well as the area of PV was excessive. The advantage of integrated solar technology in window design is in the increase in functionality at no extra installation cost. An industrially fabricated unit can be operated without the need for cables or power management and can be automatically controlled either remotely or by local means
