Experimental verification of the Risø-A airfoil family
This project involves experimental verification of three Risø-A airfoils to evaluate their application on Danish wind turbines. The Risø-A airfoils were designed for both stall and pitch regulation by use of a tool for optimum airfoil design, developed in the EFP 95 Blade design project.
The airfoil series contains 7 airfoils with thickness ranging from 12% to 30% of the airfoil chord. The verification is carried out with a testing facility from the EFP 95 Blade design project. The project involves manufacture and instrumentation of airfoil models, testing in the VELUX wind tunnel and analysis of results. The aerodynamic forces are found from pressure measurements. Steady as well as dynamic inflows are measured, Where dynamic inflow concerns dynamic stall and edgewise vibrations. Furthermore, the effects of vortex generators, stall strips and dirt and dust on the leading edge are investigated. The measurement results are analyzed and the airfoil properties are evaluated and documented. The participating industrial partners will use the verified airfoils in their optimization of new blade prototyper and the airfoils can eventually be modified for blades of the future. Furthermore, the project provides a verification of the developed tools for airfoil design and experimental verification, so that these tools can be used the Danish wind turbine industry in the future
