GreenFuelCell - Integrated gasification-fuel cell plant (SOFT)

The project co-financed Danish participation in a European partnership under the 6th framework programme to test whether gas from thermal biomass gasification can be purified sufficiently to be used as fuel in a SOFC fuel cell.

Project description

Electricity production by SOFC fuel cells is one road to obtain a high efficiency in electricity production. In order to meet this demand in a sustainable way, this project has the objective to develop a up scalable gasification technology that can produce a gas that is clean enough to feed a SOFC. The work programme in this project has been structured to solve the two main barriers related to producing clean gasification gas: 1) Staged fixed-bed gasification producing a very clean gas cannot be up-scaled to more than 5 MW_t_h. 2) The output gas from all other gasification systems without extensive and expensive gas cleaning systems is to dirty to be fed into SOFC fuel cells. In order to overcome these barrier two new designed up scalable staged gasifiers, integrating tar cleaning technologies based on char beds, will be developed. One char bed with bed material and one char bed with out bed material will be built and tested. The advantages of the two designs will be evaluated and compared. By implementing this technology, gasifiers will be able to produce a gas that is clean enough to meet the fuel requirements of a SOFC fuel cells through reliable, up-scalable and cost-effective staged gasification of biomass

Results

TK Energi’s gasification concept was demonstrated in a semi-hot version in a reactor of heat-resistant steel; however, the pyrolysis caused problems in the final test. DTU Mechanical Engineering and Risø DTU harvested exciting new data on tar formation and removal during staged gasification. In addition, new limits for SOFC sensitivity to typical pollutants in gasification gas were identified.
