LIFT-OFF gasifier in Gjøl

Energi og Miljø

In the EU subsidised project, under the Fifth Framework Programme, a gasification plant was established in Gjøl based on TK Energi’s staged gasification technology.

Project description

The objective of this project is to develop, construct, demonstrate and verify a gasification technology fired with woodchips and implemented at the natural gas fired combined heat and power (CHP) plant in Gjøl. This project will improve the environmental consequences linked to the production of CHP by replacing fossil fuel (natural gas) with biomass (wood chips) and thereby reducing the green house gas emissions. Furthermore, Gjøl will achieve a number of advantages since the plant will become more fuel flexible, and in the long run it will be able to reduce the heating price for the consumer. The economic and environmental advantages are significant by implementing this gasification technology, because of the increased fuel flexibility, the reduction of emissions and the cheaper fuels connected to the substitution of natural gas with biomass. In this project is included the required remaining funding for realisation of a European project with a total budget of 27,500,000 DKR. The consortium has finished the contractual negotiations with the European Commission, and the contract preparation for the project has been initiated. If the natural gas fired district-heating plant invest in a gasifier and produce gasification gas instead of buying natural gas, the plant will be able to pay back the total debt in 11 years instead of 20 years

Results

The gasifier was intended for gas production based on wood chips for a converted natural gas engine at Gjøl private heating and power station, but even though the entire plant, including gas cooling and cleaning, gasification building, gasification gas pipes and district heating water, was established, it was impossible within the framework of the project to commission the plant and demonstrate stable operation. At the time of writing, the future status of the plant remains unclear
