Alternative fuels for marine applications

The overall objective of this IEA-task is to compile an extensive volume of information relative to the implementation of various alternative fuels within the European maritime sector and recommend the most sustainable sound policies.

An international report, which will be a good tool for policy makers, ship owners and other private companies and public authorities in Denmark and other countries, has been delivered. The content highlights opportunities and barriers connected with applying new / alternative fuels in the shipping industry in the light of the stricter emission regulations and fuel specifications introduced in the years up to 2020-25 .
Project description

The project addresses the technological development within energy application and supply for marine transportation. The project addresses both state-of-the-art and the possible future developments from the viewpoint of a sensible policy which will lead to fulfillment of international energy and environmental political goals.

The overall objective of the Task is to compile an extensive volume of information relative to the implementation of various alternative fuels (AF) within the European maritime sector and recommend the most fiscally sound policies in order to achieve the goals of environmental compliance, seamless integration of alternative fuels within existing infrastructures, unfettered maritime trade practices, and fewest impediments to ship owners and operators.

The project will identify internationally coordinated and acceptable strategies for introduction of the future fuels and emission technology, in this context the widest possible introduction of alternative fuels and adapted to the situation in other transportation sectors

Results

The report provides an estimate of the future fuels that will be used in the shipping industry in the short and long term , both within ECA (Emission Control Areas) areas and SECA (SOx Emission Control Areas) areas, and in open sea areas. A major finding of the study is an overview of the challenges associated with the critical technical / economic issues for both conventional and alternative fuels that are evaluated to be relevant in the investigation. These can be summarized as : 1 Cost of engine / fuel system , 2 The cost of fuel , 3 The cost of reducing emissions , 4 Cost of safety , 5 Indirect costs, for instance reduced load capacity and ethical issues.
