Utilisation of low-grade waste heat by means of high temperature heat pumps

The project objective is to accelerate the implementation of new large (> 500 kW) high-temperature heat pumps by means of fullscale demonstration. The new heat pump solutions can produce heat at 95-150 degrees C (e.g. water), which makes it possible to utilize industrial waste heat for process heating in new, interesting ways. In Denmark, 5000 TJ/year can be recovered from industrial processes according to recently published reports, which initially forms the energy savings potential for the project. Although many other factors besides heat pump technology influence the feasibility of such technology, these new products will through the combination of high output temperature, refrigerant type and size of commercially available heat pumps, dismantle some of the existing heat pump barriers. The constituted project group ensures that all aspects of the market potential for this technology will be enlightened, analyzed and disseminated

The purpose of the project was to demonstrate how heating pump technology combined with industrial surplus can break down barriers for exploitation of the surplus. The barriers concern both technical and tax related relations. The technology that has been demonstrated during the project is a heating pump solution that can produce temperatures above 100 degrees which allows a whole new application perspective.
Project description

The purpose of the project is to demonstrate the feasibility of recovering industrial waste heat through emerging high-temperature heat pumps. The project will initially analyze the feasibility of integrating 1 out of 4 different high-temperature heat pump solutions at AF (spray drying), TD (dairy) and AS (meat production) and secondly the project will carry out a full-scale demonstration based on the analysis. ANH will investigate the selection and integration of the optimal heat pump into their drying systems initially in cooperation with AF

Results

The project has analyzed the process in three different food-production companies. These has shown that the use of energy can be minimized without the use of heating pumps. Only in one case – ARLA´s milk powder production Arinco in Vedbæk – showed calculations that proved heating pumps as a good investment.

In September 2012 a 1, 25 MW hybrid heating pump solution was installed – the first in Denmark – which means that ARLA has an annual saving of 15 mil. KWh and furthermore reduces the discharge with 1.150 tons CO2.

After one year operation of the plant the heating pump solution is proven to have an effective (COP) at 4, 6. The installment of the plant (without support) is estimated to 2,3 years. The project shows that heating pumps used in the right way in the food-industry is a good business for both the company and society.

Furthermore the project has developed a new tool for advisers in the business, which can be helpful when the energy efficiency has to develop in a non-cost way. The key principles of the project have been:

  1. Minimize the energy need through thorough analyzes
  2. Use heat exchange if possible
  3. Size the heating pump based on the real needs

The project has been mentioned at conferences and a couple of journals.
