Energy efficient ventilation for existing high-rise buildings

The project develops new innovative ventilation technical system solutions for the very large high-rise building stock. The professional perspective is primarily a breach of common thinking in a groove that has caused Denmark to lag behind the other Nordic countries with regard to ventilation. The heat consumption amounts to app. one fifth of Denmark's total energy consumption. DTU estimates that 50 - 60% of the energy consumption for heating houses is wasted i.a. because natural ventilation or control exhaust still is the standard in houses instead of active ventilation with heat recovery. The project will be carried out with the following 4 work packages: WPl: Analysis of five system solutions. Each system solution is designed with regard to the following parameters: 1) Optimal distribution of outdoor air for each apartment, 2) Optimal air supply fittings, 3) Fire protection of model solutions, 4) Strategy for demand driven control; WP2: Establishment and documentation of system solutions in two apartment blocks; WP3: Development of dimensioning tools; WP4: Provision of system solutions. The project will improve the state-of-the-art for ventilation in high-rise buildings in the following important areas: - lower energy expenses for ventilation, - improved thermal climate and air quality, - reduced risk of mould and dry rot, - possibility of demand control. The energy consumption for ventilation without heat recovery theoretically amounts to 35% of the total heat consumption in existing high-rise buildings. It will be possible for the substitution to reduce the energy consumption by app. 75%

Results

The objective of the project is to develop flexible system solution models for energy efficient substitution of control exhaust and natural ventilation with mechanically balanced ventilation with heat recovery in older hlgh-rise buildings and then prepare a complete renovation kit for the building and ventilation trade
