Test facility for grid connection characteristics of wind power plants

This project is the first phase in the development of an advanced test facility which will enable the wind power industry to develop and test new grid connection solutions, and validate the grid connection characteristics of wind power plants.

Results

Project aim: The aim of the project entitled “Test Facility for Grid Connection Characteristics of Wind Power Plants” project was to find the right technical solution for the test facility, together with an establishment and operational budget. Furthermore, the possible funding options and operational organisations were to be investigated, culminating in an implementation plan. Project results: The test facility will be located at the Østerild National Test Centre for Large Wind Turbines. The following results are included in the final report: - Technical solutions: In order to meet the requirements for future tests, the test facility should comprise of two major sets of equipment: A power electronics converter that will allow a variety of tests of the wind turbines to develop and validate advanced grid compliance, and a short circuit unit which is dedicated to low voltage ride through tests. - Budget: The total budget for the implementation and operation of a 16MW test facility has been made - Organisation: The test facility will be run as part of the Østerild Test Centre organisation. - Implementation plan: A time schedule including the establishment and operation phases has been detailed. Deviations from the original application: An implementation plan was provided in place of tender documents. See final report. The final report of the EUDP-supported project entitled “Test Facility for Grid Connection Characteristics of Wind Power Plants” was issued on 1st May 2011. The project investigates various technical options for a test facility to emulate different electrical grid conditions at the site of the forthcoming National Test Centre for Large Turbines at Østerild, in Denmark. The test facility will provide wind turbine manufacturers with the opportunity to test turbine properties to a greater extent than presently possible. This will enable both turbines and standards to be developed to assist the integration of increasing wind power in power systems around the world in the future. Following the assessment of technical concepts the project focuses on the chosen solution and considers the organisational and business case for running the facility. A budget cost for the establishment is formulated, together with a funding plan. Finally, an implementation plan is presented that will carry the project forward through to establishment and operation.
