Test and Approval Center for Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Technologies: Phase 1

The FCH test center has had a good start and today it has a big national as well international network with the most important team players within the field. The first commercial assignments have been handled and there is still an ambition towards becoming Europe’s favorite test center in the field of hydrogen and fuel cells.

Project description

The present project aims at initialization of a Test and Approval Center for Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Technologies and start of its first activities in close co-operation with the industrial players. The focus of these activities will be the development of accelerated life-time tests of fuel cell systems, preparations for standardization of these methods, and advising in relation to certification and approval of fuel cell systems. Furthermore, forthcoming phases to develop and internationalize the Center will be prepared and started. Danish industrial players have expressed a strong need for support in the process to push fuel cell and hydrogen teclmologies from the research and development stage into the commercial domain. The Center that is initialized in the present project will eventually support industry with test, development, analysis, approval, certification, consultation, and training in the areas of fuel cell and hydrogen technologies. The Center builds on demonstrated Danish strengths in the fuel cell and hydrogen technologies. It will contribute to a continuing strong position for Denmark in these fast developing areas in the near and far future. Furthermore, the Center will help to secure that the substantial investments already spent on these technologies also lead to commercial success

Results

By active action the project succeeded to establish a big national and international network with the important players from the industry. Today FCH test Center is well know and participates in many international projects. This involves, among others, the EU – project ene.feild which is a big demonstration project for micro heat power. Other new projects deal with electrolysis and PEM –fuel cells. To meet the needs of the industry there has been purchased new test supplies in the process of developing test of the lifetime for SOFC – cells and stack in close cooperation with Topsoe Fuel Cell. Danish Gastechnical Center implemented standard activities and processed the work for lance of the SOFC lifetime tests, which in long terms can be the international standard. Danish Gastechnical Center sorted out a guide for authority handling, for stationary hydrogen and fuel cell projects. After the end of this project other projects will carry on. The first commercial applications have come in, and it remains our ambition to become Europe's preferred test center for hydrogen and fuel cells (Forskning i Bioenergi, Brint og Brændselsceller, nr. 41, september 2012)
