Project description

The EFP-06 project ''Naturlig ventilation med Varmegenindvinding og Køling'' (Natural ventilation with heat recovery and precooling - NVHC) is currently in the closing phase with expected end date on the 1st of May 2009. In this EFP-project, a concept combining natural ventilation with heat recovery and precooling of the inlet air has been developed. Lab. test at Danish Technological Institute have shown good accordance between theory and practice, and the concept is now ready to be tested and demonstrated on a full scale basis. The current NVHC demonstration project is scheduled to be carried out in a CO2-neutral sports centre, ''Kultur & Idrætscentret'' in Fynshav, Sønderborg. In the NVHC demonstration project, the theory developed in the EFP-project will be tested and the system will be monitored and reported. The results from the demonstration project will be used in the final product development before a commercial distribution of the product will be introduced by IKM A/S. Introduction of heat recovery and cooling in natural ventilation systems is an important step to increase the use of natural ventilation in new and existing buildings instead of using the more electricity consuming mechanical balanced systems with heat recovery

Results

Natural ventilation is becoming more and more popular due to low installation cost and low running costs. However it has not been possible to make heat recovery from natural ventilation due to the low airflow pressure. Also, it has not been possible to introduce cooling of the inlet air to natural ventilation. In a previous project : “Natural Ventilation with Heat Recovery and Cooling (NVVK1) “, the concept has been developed and tested in a prototype in the laboratory. The laboratory tests have shown good results for use in practice, and there was basis for implementing the system in a full-scale demonstration project (NVVK2).

The demonstration project is described in this report. It was implemented in the Sportscenter Diamanten - Cultural and Sports Center in Fynshav, Municipality of Sønderborg, DK. The demonstration project includes simulation, energy balance calculations, dimensioning and design of the NVVK-system. Furthermore construction and installation of the system and finally dissemination activities. In a separate funding project with another project manager the operation of the installed system has been tested, optimized, measured, evaluated and reported
