Design of energy renovation of typical buildings - elaboration of collection of examples

The energy saving potential by energy renovating the existing building stock in Denmark is very large but the implementation of energy savings is only carried out to a small extend. In order to encourage the completion of energy renovations in buildings there is a need for improving the foundation for evaluation and selection of the optimised solutions. The objective of the project is to develop a method for design of extensive energy renovations that will encourage the completion of energy savings in existing buildings to reach ''low energy class 1'' level. The development of the method will be based on detailed analysis on the effect of the partial energy saving measures carried out in buildings. The analyses will be made for typical building types and the results will make up an example collection of buildings that represent the total building stock in Denmark. The developed method including examples will constitute a strong and reliable foundation for implementation of the best energy saving solutions in different building types. If done correctly it will also be possible to improve the indoor environment by energy renovations. This important additional benefit will also be evaluated in the form of improved comfort, less health risk and increased productivity

Project description

The aim of the project was to stimulate the implementation of energy renovations of buildings by improving the basis for evaluation and selection of the best energy saving solutions. The goal was to develop planning methods for comprehensive energy renovations and promotion of energy savings to a level similar to BR08's Low Energy Class 1. The project has prepared an example collection of energy renovation measures and energy renovation of typical-made buildings. More specifically, the project has developed a catalog of typical energy renovation measures and drawn up specific examples of the effect of individual actions and combinations of good energy renovation actions/solutions in typical buildings, including effects on indoor climate. The building-specific analyses or ''extended energy certification'' were made on five typical buildings: Detached house, Master builder house, Block of flats, School and Office buildings. Based on a description and energy calculation of the existing building, analyses of energy renovation measures were made resulting in proposals for actions to upgrade to the following energy performance levels: BR 08 new buildings level, Low Energy Class 2 and Low Energy Class 1. The project's overall results are likely to provide a strong foundation for the building industry designers and others in connection with the implementation of energy saving solutions in existing buildings. As expected the project shows that energy renovation is primarily economically viable in connection with renovation and upgrading undertaken anyway for other reasons. A lot of energy renovation is not carried out due to economy, because other factors such as comfort, indoor climate, less maintenance, better performing building and future security is often not part of the building owner's consideration when energy renovation is considered. Therefore many energy renovation measures are not implemented, or they will be implemented at a lower level than desired from a societal perspective, i.e. energy system without consumption of fossil energy resources. It should therefore be examined which motivation initiatives that can be developed and aimed at relevant building owners to persuade them to conduct more thorough energy renovation
