EUDP-08-I, Manufacturing of cells and stacks for SOFC development, test and demonstration projects and SOFC hotbox design development, Phase 2
The project worked with three key objectives in the roadmap on Danish fuel cell strategy. Optimisation of fuel cell production, an area in which the project succeeded in saving electricity and raw materials by using new methods and techniques and by introducing more automated machines at the new factory. Two new and more efficient stack designs were implemented as routine production. The 10 kW SOFC demonstration unit at the H.C. Ørsted Power Station was equipped with two batch stacks, the considerable challenges providing us with new insight – until now outside Topsoe Fuel Cell’s core competences – and that may promote development of the PowerCore system (hotbox).
The purpose of this project is to support the continued SOFC (Solid Oxide Fuel Cell) development through manufacturing process optimization and manufacturing of SOFC cells and stacks. These cells and stacks will serve as a necessary base for the development activities and for the establishment of a number of test and demonstration activities. The manufacture will also help provide operating experience and reduce manufacturing cost. Another main focus of the manufacturing is to assure technical improvements and reliability. It is imperative to the ultimate success of the technology that test and demonstration is carried out in the pre-market conditions that will exist for the next years in the three market segments targeted by Topsoe Fuel Cell: Distributed generation, Micro-CHP (Combined Heating and Power) and APU (Auxiliary Power Units) incl. marine APU). Finally, the project also includes development activities focusing on the stack-system interface (hotbox design development) and on dealing with transients and start up and shut down times, which is of particular importance for APU and micro CHP applications
