Vacuum synergy
The development of evacuated glazings approaches prototype production. Thus the basis for decision-making for commercial production will be created within approx. a year and a half.
Still, there are some technical problems to be solved in a more efficient and sophisticated way. The proposal for this project continues this process of development. The development of vacuum insulation, which in the framework of the Energy Research Program (EFP) started in 1995, has special favourable conditions in Denmark because Rockwool produces hard mineral wool. It is to be examined how to modify this product in order to avoid degassing, and to find the best method of packing. This year, the two vacuum technologies have been merged into one application because there is a considerable synergy in the development of the two technologies. The evacuated glazings are not only better than traditional windows. The perspective is to develop a building envelope of evacuated glazings which surrounds the living rooms. Calculations show that in the middle of the winter the climate under the screen is going to be like on a Danish summer day. Thus the rooms under the buildin envelope can be heated at no cost (so-called free heating). The use of movable photovoltaic cells produce electricity and protect against superheating in the advanced building. The project proposal will not only make it possible to get close to the EFP's long-term zero energy goal of new buildings, but also outrival this goal because existing buildings will be zero enrgy buildings under the building envelope too
