The Albertslund Concept - a commercial Danish concept for integrated energy efficient retrofitting of housing

The objective of this project is to develop, test and demonstrate a cost-efficient concept for energy efficient retrofitting, reducing a dwelling's energy frame value to low-energy class 1 or better.

Project description

A considerable part of the industrialized housing stock from the 1960s and the 1970s are currently in need of a comprehensive renovation, and no commercial concept for integrated energy efficient retrofitting is available today. The objective of this project is to develop, test and demonstrate a cost-efficient concept for energy efficient retrofitting, reducing a dwelling's energy frame value to low-energy class 1 or better, with the same or better total economy than if low-energy class 2, including production and installation of building components and operation of the dwelling. The concept will be demonstrated through retrofitting of 9 show houses in Albertslund. Those dwellings are in combination representative for a considerable part of the housing stock suited for renovation, and so the concept developed in the project will be fit for large scale marketing. The final aim of the project is to demonstrate that low-energy and cost-effective retrofitting of housing can be obtained in practice, when combined with prefabrication and rapid installation measures. This project provides a concept that makes it easy for a building owner to choose an integrated energy efficient retrofitting of his housing property, because the concept can easily and cost-effectively be applied to his dwelling(s)

Results

The project's main focus is the development of prefabricated energy renovation solutions for industrialized housing, improving the energy performance to low energy level (BR2015 – The Danish Building regulations valid from 2015). The demonstration includes:

“Hyldespjældet” (from BR 1972 to CO2-neutral housing, inaugurated in December 2009).
Development of a new innovative building component: Solar prism (natural ventilation, mechanical ventilation with heat recovery, daylight, heat pump, hot water system, thermal solar and photovoltaic) in combination with prefabricated insulation elements with windows.

“Fiskens kvarter” (from BR 1961 Low energy - multiple levels, inaugurated in June 2011)
The solutions to the 6 rowhouses demonstrates technology concepts for different levels from BR08 to BR2020 level achieved by combinations of insulation, new windows, mechanical ventilation with heat recovery, low temperature district heating, solar thermal and photovoltaics.

“Degnehusene”(from BR 1972 to BR 2015, inaugurated Sept. 2012) and “Flintager” (from BR 1964 to BR 2015 level, inaugurated Sept. 2012), include a newly developed sunroof providing daylight, ventilation and building integrated solar cells in combination with extensive insulation (roof +30-40 cm, outer walls +20 cm), mechanical ventilation with heat recovery.

The demonstration projects reducing the energy consumption with 50 to 80% also marks a number of important side benefits: no growth conditions for mold, good healthy indoor climate, improved daylight conditions, and improved architecture. Important arguments in the decision-making process for energy renovation.

The associated technological development with a focus on system solutions, has provided experience for the further process, not only in Albertslund, but to the national and international effort. Particular solutions includes the solarprism and solroofs where VELUX, Danfoss, Rockwool and Cenergia have teamed up to developing system solutions both for the national and international market.
