Future chiller technology

The project will develop and demonstrate a new revolutionary chiller which only uses water as refrigerant. The project will develop the technology from the laboratory level to turn-key field test prototype and demonstrate a real life application in order to obtain real operation conditions and to market the technology.
Based on 10 years of research, there has been developed a unique, competitive, energy efficient and environmentally friendly chiller (heat pump) with water as refrigerant. The purpose of the project was to develop the technology and demonstrate it. Chiller-market is growing rapidly, and Denmark, among others via strict requirements for refrigerants opportunity through this project, to get quickly into the global market for large industrial cooling systems ahead of other competing technologies.
Project description

The project will develop and demonstrate a new revolutionary chiller which only uses water as refrigerant. The project will develop the technology from the laboratory level to turn-key field test prototype and demonstrate a real life application in order to obtain real operation conditions and to market the technology. The project will cover the following work packages:

Planning of demonstration site - integration of the unit in the existing utility system; - Seven stage compressor development and laboratory test - engineering and test of driveline, etc.;

  • Engineering and constuction of 0-series chiller unit - re-design, optimization and manufacturing;
  •  Installation at demonstration site - building modifications, installations and performance tests;
  • Demonstration and long term test - data taking, inspections, modifications;
  • Dissemination - report, papers, presentations, open house arrangement, customer visists, etc..

The project is based on a previous ten years, DKK 40 million R&D project that has developed two full scale laboratory chillers in Denmark at DTI (Danish Technological Institute) and two full scale prototypes in Japan at Kobe steel, where all critical targets on design, efficiency, performance has been confirmed. During the demonstration phase JCD will mature the product and expect to release a fully commercial water vapor chiller at the beginning of 2014, the units will be produced in Denmark
