The PV LED Engine - new generation of intelligent solar powered LED lighting

The opbjective of the project is to realize the most intelligent high-end platform seen on the market today for autonomous solar energy powered lighting application. An interactive dimensioning tool for PV (photo voltaics) products are furthermore developed to significantly lowering the barriers towards use of solar cells in lighting applications.
The project aims to develop intelligent solar powered LED solutions for high-end lighting market and provide a technically superior platform for integrating photovoltaic applications. Further provided and published an interactive design tool for solar products.
Project description

The opbjective of the project is to realize the most intelligent high-end platform seen on the market today for autonomous solar energy powered lighting application. An interactive dimensioning tool for PV (photo voltaics) products are furthermore developed to significantly lowering the barriers towards use of solar cells in lighting applications and maing it extremely easy to evaluate the potential of new design. The developed hardware platform will be based on the most optimized combination of PV, LED (Light Emitting Diodes), storage tachnology, optics, intelligent software and electronics for makiing a scalable system for use with 0.5 Wp - 100 Wp solar panels and is termed the PV LED Engine. The PV LED Engine will be integrated and marketed through Out-sider integrated in the company's lighting products for the urban environment. This is a rather narrow market niche compared to the possibilities of the PV LED Engine and the system will already in the final development phase be offered to the lighting companies in Danish Lighting Center having more than 800 members

Results

The basic objectives and results of the project have been

  • Development of a mathematical tool to design PV LED systems and simulate their performance in relatively shaded areas like  the   urban environment.
  • Development of a laboratory facility being able to feed in the relevant data for the simulation.
  • Development of an electronic conversion unit tailored for PV lighting systems in the range <50 Wp, seen from the PV side, having an efficiency beyond 90% in the dynamic rage.
  • Creation of a PV LED ENGINE technical platform based on the above mentioned technology and bringing them to them market in products in different scales of the addressed <50 Wp interval.

5 solar powered prototypes of different sizes of lighting products in the whole power span has been simulated, measured, fabricated and tested/validated based on the PV LED ENGINE.
