Benchmarking of wind farm flow models IEA Task 31 (WakeBench)
The objective is to reach international consensus and establish guidelines on operation of wind farm flow models through a collaborative research work (IEA Task 31). Better understanding and validation of wind farm models used by the industry will result in an improved wind farm performance and reduce the Danish dependency to fossil fuels.
The IEA Task 31 project aims at benchmarking the different wind farm flow models available as research or commercial tools with various types of realistic wind farm sites. It is an ambitious goal, as some of these wind farm sites are very difficult to model with most of the existing models. One of the main objectives of this project will be to define best practice guidelines on how to use the various wind farm production estimation tools according to the type of wind farm site considered. The IEA Task 31, lead by CENER (Spain) and NREL (USA), is an international collaboration between more than 60 participants, which includes most of the major actors from both the wind research community and wind industry. The EUDP-WakeBench project finances the membership of Denmark to the IEA Task 31, and support the participation of DTU to the different activities. EUDP-WakeBench is not a commercial project; however, there is a big industrial interest to this project. The industry expects increased confidence to existing products and more accurate models in the market. For this reason, the results will be accessible to the industry during the project.
