SERC - Strategic electrochemistry research center
The Strategic Electrochemistry Research Center (SERC) is a 6-year strategic research center in fundamental aspects of electrochemical cells with a view to significantly extend our understanding of the materials limitations which currently impede a widespread commercialization of the technology. The consortium behind the center consists of the leading Danish research institutions in the field and a wide spectrum of industrial partners. The center will implement its science objectives through the education of Ph.D. students and postdocs. The individual projects will each address different aspects of the crucial challenges for electrochemical cells which need to be solved to improve their performance and durability
The 6-years Strategic Electrochemistry Research Center studied fundamental aspects of electrochemical cells with a
view to significantly extend our understanding of the materials limitations which currently impede a widespread
commercialization of the technology. Electrochemical cells have the potential to play a crucial role in the energy sector
of a sustainable society: In electricity generation (as fuel cells), in fuel production (as electrolysers), for gas cleaning and
as gas sensors.
The results comprise new methods for characterization of electrochemical cells, new understanding of materials
properties, new electrodes and an oxygen sensor, construction of pressurized electrolysis set-ups for making synthetic
fuel, 2 patents and 77 articles.
The purpose was to do technical research within electrochemistry, to educate Ph.D. students, and train postdocs together
with partners. Results have had impact in form of improved products and processes of partner industries plus new
projects.
