CropsGas - Biogas production from energy crops
The project will investigate whether it is possible to use energy crops such as willow, elephant grass, ensiled grass and wheat straws as alternatives to organic industrial waste in biogas plants. The energy crops are pre-treated with a simple shredding and wet explosion process and tested in batch experiments to determine their biogas potential
The feasibility of utilizing energy crops (willow and miscanthus) and agriculture residues (wheat straw and corn stalker) in an anaerobic digestion process for biogas production was evaluated. Potential energy crops and agriculture residues were screened according to their suitability for biogas production. Morevoer, pre-treatment of these biomasses by using wet expolosion method was studied and the effect of the wet explosion process was tested. ensiling of perennial crops was tested as a storage method and pretreatment method for enhancement of the biodegradation of the crops. Co-digestion of raw and wet explosion pretreated energy crops and swine manure was carried out by batch tests and continuous experiments. (Energy 11)
