The main activities of the project were developing improved SOFC electrodes, cells and interconnects through careful characterizations in interaction with new fabrication methods. Major break-throughs in this project were: 1) the fabrication of Ni-YSZ/YSZ/LSM-YSZ cells with significantly improved LSM-YSZ-cathodes with ca. 30 % higher performance of the cell, 2) fabrication of a Ni-YSZ/YSZ/CGO/LSFC-CG0 cell with the highest cell performance ever measured at Risø of 1.5 w/cm2 at 750 deg. C, and 3) acquisition of a micrograph that visualizes the in-situ electrical properties of an YSZ surface at 650 deg. C was achieved through the development of a novel instrument, which we call a controlled atmosphere high temperature scanning probemicroscope (CAHT-SPM). A patent application on improved electrode structure was filed, and another patent application on controlling deleterious impurities was prepared. New, less expensive stainless steel interconnects supplied by a commercial company were tested in stacks and post-mortem characterized by electron microscopy
