Adiabatic liquid piston compressed air energy storage

Traditional Comressed Air Energy Storage (CAES) is seen as one of the most cost effective technologies for the bulk energy storage in the future flexible grid. The project will investigate the possible lift of the round trip effiency by the introduction of Adiabatic Liquid Piston CAES (ALP-CAES) which is expected to be highly competative.
Project description

The mechanical/electrical efficiency of the ALP-CAES system is significantly higher than existing CAES systems due to a low or nearly absent compression heat loss. When comparing ALP-CAES to an adiabatic CAES system, where compression heat is stored in thermal oil, the ALP-CAES system is found only to be competitive under a very specific set of operating/design conditions.
