PVIB - PV Island Bornholm

The "PV Island Bornholm" (PVIB) project aims at establish 5 MWp PV on the island of Bornholm. Of this, app. 1MWp will be installed in this phase. PVIB will focus on demonstration and further utilization of PV and as such provide unique facilities to test how PV as a fluctuating energy source can be implemented in a future intelligent power system.

Results

At the end of 2012, a total of 347 projects totalling 2,16 MWp have been approved for support. These plants includes mainly private households, however 10 commercial plants sizing from 12,5 to 98,8 kWp are also included. Since there is a temporal overlap between the phases, some of these plants mentioned above are supported through means provided by the second phase succeeding the one that are the main topic of this final report.

The private plants vary in size, the main part, however, are relatively close to the limit for utilizing the netmetering scheme, and thus the average size of the private plants is 5,2 kWp.

A practical example on how the experiences and PV plants established through PVIB have been utilized in other R&D activities is the launching of a cooperation between the PVIB project and the ForskEL project named “Application of Smart Grid in PV power systems”.

As part of this activity a number of the inverters on the PV plants will be equipped with remote control facilities and then be included in tests regarding power grid stability.
