Characterization of ultrafine particles from CHP Plants < 25 MWe

This project describes and quantifies fine and ultrafine particles emitted from 9 Danish CHP plants powered by solid waste, biomass, gas and gasoil. Measurements of number and mass emissions of PM0.1, PM1 and PM2.5 were performed. Analysis of morphology and possible origin of particles with diameters from 30 nm to 2500 nm was performed.
Project description

This project will make use of the UFP samples collected at Combined Heat and Power production plants (CHP plants) in Denmark during the project ''Mapping emissions from decentralized CHP plants '', to be performed by DGC-DMU-FORCE Technology and Analytech in 2008-2009 with support from energi-net.dk. The project will be completed on the basis of exisiting and new monitoring data from all Danish CHP plants

Results
Key findings were: • The mass emissions from the WTE plants were very low due to the use of efficient bag filters and Electrostatic Precipitators (ESP) for emission control at these plants. • A significant enrichment of metals (e.g. Fe, Mn, Cu) in the PM0.1 and the PM1 fractions were found for particles from both WTE and BM plants. • The high number of particles emitted from the gas engines in the GF plants is most probably caused by the use of lubrication oil. • The FIB-SEM analysis of particles from the gas fired plants showed that the soot particles of a diameter of 150 nm – 1000 nm from these plants may be hollow as well as solid.
