Catchcrop2biogas

Sektionen for Bæredygtig Bioteknologi (SSB)
The aim of the Catchcrop2biogas project is to investigate the potential of using catch crops as feedstock for biogas production. This will be done by screening 12 different catch crops samples, followed by process optimization on 2-3 most promising candidates. Finally there will be a large-scale biogas test performed with one selected catch crop.
Project description
The aim of the Catchcrop2biogas project is to investigate the potential of using catch crops as feedstock for biogas production. This will be done by screening 12 different catch crops samples, followed by process optimization on 2-3 most promising candidates. Finally there will be a large-scale biogas test performed with one selected catch crop.
Results
The aim of the Catchcrop2biogas project is to evaluate and demonstrate the utilization of different catch crops as feedstock for biogas plants in the frame of sustainable biomass production for bioenergy production. Agrotech A/S is currently performing field trials with 12 different catch crops for screening the biomass yield and the ability for binding nutrients. The Catchcrop2biogas project will take advantage of these field trials and will do research on the biogas potential of these cultivated catch crops. Agrotech A/S will supply samples of the catch crops to the Section for Sustainable Biotechnology at Aalborg University (SSB-AAU) where the analysis of the biogas potential and process optimization will be performed. Furthermore Agrotech A/S will characterize the different catch crops with respect to biomass yield and nutrient binding in order to identify the most suitable candidates for catch crops from an agricultural viewpoint. For identifying the biogas potential of the catch crops the following aspects are of special interest:
1) Biogas potential of catch crops depending on  harvesting time
2) Biogas potential of catch crops depending on storage conditions
3) Inhibitors from catch crops for the biogas process
4) Co-digestion of catch crops with manure and other crops
The Catchcrop2biogas project will address all these aspects in order to find the most suitable catch crops in an optimized biogas process. Finally, a selected catch crop will be tested as feedstock in large-scale at Biokraft’s biogas plant on Bornholm.
