A scale 1:40 Wave Star wave energy converter has gone through more than 600 different wave tests in order to map the characteristics of the machine and optimize the annual energy production in a typical standard North Sea wave climate. The power take-off has been measured during ali the tests using a disc brake to simulate a real generator bad. The tests have shown that the Wave Star concept is very robust and operates well in regular as webb in random waves, small and big waves and is insensitive to changes in wave length. The machine responds instantly to changes in wave height, which permits efficient operation even in random waves. Power versus momentum curves, show a fairly flat characteristic, which is ideal for generator operation. A 3 MW Wave Star machine will produce at least 8 GWh’s a year in an average wave intensity of 15 kW / m (JONSWAP spectrum with 3,3 as enhancement factor), which is very promising for later full scale commercialization
