4DH - Strategic Research Centre for 4th Generation District Heating Technologies and Systems

Improved district heating technology is important for utilisation of power planted heat, geothermal energy, waste, biomass, sun and wind and contributes to making Denmark independent of fossil fuel before 2050. The centre researches in e.g. low temperature district heat systems, heating of low energy houses and planning tools and has participation of operators from the district heating sector.

Project description

The aim of 4HD Strategic Research Centre is to enhance the development of 4th Generation District Heating Technologies and Systems (4GHD). This technology is crucial in meeting the Danish ambition of being fossil fuel-free in 2050 and the European 2020 goals. Denmark currently has a district heating share of approximately 50 per cent, which has the potential to enable large fuel savings on district heating and by including sustainable energy and low-temperature energy sources. Integrating district heating in the future energy system requires optimization, reorganization and development of a new type of district heating technology that is based on lower temperatures and capable of interacting with low-energy houses and flexible energy production. The research centre is multidisciplinary and will generate knowledge within the areas of design of future district heating network technologies, including interaction with heating of low-energy houses; planning and management tools based on Geographical Information System (GIS); tools for design of flexible district heating production systems including legal, tariff and organization models.
