Implementation of high quality dynamic LED lighting

This project exhibits at the LED conference the 20th of March 2013 hold in IDA-Huset in Copenhagen. The focus for the conference is light, health and health service. The conference is organised by Dansk Center for Lys and DTU Fotonik. The theme covers the problematic, that the future energy efficient light must considerate visual, biological and emotional characteristics within different humans. The developed LED fitting integrates both LED technology and visual, biological and emotinal characteristics for creating the good light for humans all day, every day and focus on energy efficiency by using LED tecknology.

This ELFORSK project has been realized as the DayLight product portfolio, which is already selling both in Denmark and on the global market. This project has also been giving valued research results and knowledge concerning energy consumption and user satisfaction with dynamic lighting in office buildings.
Project description

By combining I-NO's latest LED technology with experiences from SBi tests with dynamic light regulation the projekt team will investigate if great energy savings can be achieved within common lighting in office buildings by giving the users control of the lighting colour temperature. A fitting for common lighting, that makes it possible to regulate the colour temperature between 2700-5500 K. The fitting is tested at SBi and is demonstrated in the projects second phase in full scale at Novo Nordisk. The goal is to reduce the electricity consumption for common lighting in working rooms/office buildings to a third by halve the lighting amperage and use the more energy efficient I-NO technology developed in ELFORSK project 342-021 - Energy efficient retail lighting based on the LED - the development of commercial lighting system and interface.

Results

This ELFORSK project has been realized as the DayLight product portfolio, which is already selling both in Denmark and on the global market. This project has also been giving valued research results and knowledge concerning energy consumption and user satisfaction with dynamic lighting in office buildings as Novo Nordisk, which is the case during this project.

This product portfolio has made it easy to use dynamic lighting by standardization of the control so all control units easily can be used by the technician (new DALI Color standard). By dynamic lighting the light is changing or varies during the hours of the day and both intensity and color temperature is variated. The DayLight product is easy to re-programme, so it is an ideal platform for commercializing the research results.

This product is today implemented with the achieved research results in an elegant and light-weighted design. It is thought out, so it can be produced in Denmark and still competing with global products and it has already been creating new jobs.

The new control mechanisms have been tested in commercial installations by SBi-AAU, and gives energy savings up to 67 % for installed wattage of 6 W/m2 and 21 % for installed wattage of 2.4 W/m2 which average gives 200 lux in a room. The control mechanisms are generic and can be used generally by the lighting industry and not only for the DayLight product, which is the frontrunner.

The results in the lab confirm a former ELFORSK project, 340-036, in a commercial context. A low starting level for the light-level brings higher savings than a high starting level e.g. 67 % vs. 12 % saving by an installed wattage of 6 W/m2 and 21 % vs. 0 % saving by an installed wattage of 2.4 W/m2.

The control mechanisms are implemented directly in the DayLight portfolio, which is sold on the Danish and global market. The control mechanisms are generally useful and can be used by others without difficulties.
