Development of energy-saving light that supports healing, health and well-being in hospitals - pre-project
The project aimed to realize a vital national project to ensure that the future super hospitals utilize it quite significant potential light has to be an active part of the healing process in the hospital sector to the benefit of both patients and staff. The project was implemented as a se-ries of workshops between project participants, and based on an extensive literature study was drawn up a number of R & D areas where the project team could bring light into as an important design parameter in the design of the new hospitals:
Action 1: Quality of Daylight and view
Action 2: Lighting and sleep quality
Action 3: Daylight simulation and windowless spaces
Action 4: A healthy hospital architecture? Case study from Denmark (year 1900-2000). (i.e. forgotten knowledge in a 'New Light' in future hospital building).
Action 5: Building for better light and better darkness (in the construction phase)
Action 6: Superbugs, MRSA and UV-light UV-light can improve hygiene at hospitals
Action 7: The role of lighting in the building-process of a new hospital
Identify Controversies between medical and financial reasoning. Are there long term considerations in the planning?
Based on the literature study several hospitals, regions and foundations were contacted with the intention to establish a cooperative effort, which could create scientific evidence to light positive effects on patients and staff. Unfortunately, it was found that the economics of super hospitals are so squeezed that it not be possible to provide the self-financing, which would be necessary for the private funds in order to support a major national project.
The project was extended into 2015 because the literature study concerning hospital architec-ture produced a significant knowledge of the meaning of 'light and air' in hospital design through the ages. It was decided to collect this information in a separate document, which was completed in spring 2015.
The project has resulted in two reports:
Hospitalslys: Pilot project: Energy saving light that supports healing, health and well-being in hospitals
and
6 different hospital typologies: light and air as health parameters
