Professional energy-flexible washing machines to smart grids

Energieffektivisering & Ventilation
Washing and eventually dishwashers and dryers which use hot water or heating with heat exchanger, tested for energy efficiency, washing and wash quality and these laundries potential to exploit heat storage mapped. These machines can utilize environmentally friendly energy sources such as district heating, heat pumps and solar heating.
The results of the tests were used to develop models for hot water share and related losses as well as a calculation spreadsheet for energy calculations for laundries. Further, some investigations were made on the integration of professional washing machines with hot-fill in a smart grid context. Where results show it can be economical feasible with professional hot-fill washing machines, the framework conditions are not yet present to integrate with the electricity system.
Project description
Following the Danish Technological Institute tests of electric commercial washing machines (www.faellesvaskeri.dk) implemented in this project a similar test of washing machines as well as eventually dishwashers and tumble driers, which are based on the consumption of domestic hot water or heating with a heat exchanger. Research will develop test methods to assess energy efficiency, washing and wash quality for machines that use hot water, and these laundries potential to exploit heat storage mapped. It assesses the extent to which the structure of local heat storage can be integrated in a Smart Grid strategy from the local grid. Water-based machines can utilize environmentally friendly energy sources such as district heating, heat pumps and solar heating. The dissemination of the coming test results agreed with the Danish Energy Association at the end of the project.
Results

The aim of the project has been to develop and demonstrate a test program for testing professional hot-fill washing machines in-situ according to energy consumption and hot water share of total energy consumption in the main wash. Based on the test program, measurements on different washing machines were carried out in selected case-laundries.
