Smart City Kalundborg

SEAS NVE NET

To develop and test a market based smart city energy management platform using Kalundborg as fullscale
demo. Grid-responsive energy services are aligned with intelligent grid operations and dynamic enduser
actions to optimize use of renewable and distributed energy, energy management choices, utilization
of existing energy infrastructure and be a template that can be replicated in other cities

Smart City Kalundborg project has been running in three parallel tracks, where it was intended that the 3 traces be gathered and correlated in the last part of the project and represent the demonstration.
Project description

The objective of the initiative is to demonstrate the optimized use of renewable and distributed energy and energy management choices while achieving national and regional energy foals. This will be accomplished by harmonizing grid-responsive energy services with intelligent grid operations and dynamic end-user actions within the City of Kalundborg (demonstration host). The Energy Services Hub will transform distributed resources such as electric vehicles (EVs), photovoltaics (PV), buildings, residences and an electric ferry, among others, into supportive assets used by the DNO to strengthen grid function. In the process, the initiative will support rising business models by aligning the entire value chain in a sustainable and expandable operational architechture.

The main activities of the the project will include the development of an Energy Services Hub (ESH) technology and "Grid-Responsive" services and technologies by numerous Service and Technology Provider partners (SPs and TPs) participating in the project. The ESH is a technology platform that enables a seamless, dynamic interplay between Service Providers and the DNO to support real-time grid operation. This is accomplished by enabling a new interaction: a shared system where Service Providers and End-Users can respond to requests from the DNO and other Service Providers through a shared system. This is built around the ESH, which will integrate with the DNO's back-end system to tie market opportunities and demands in a cohesive, information-based system while ensuring strengthened grid operation.

Several other technologies are developed and enhanced in the project as well, including: building management, efficient pumping, PV cells, EVs and charging stations that will all interact with the Energy Services Hub to optimize the use of renewable energy and efficiency technologies in the city. Each of these technologies will be made "Grid-Responsive" to enable the synergistic capabilities of support for the grid and support for other services.

Results

The project did not get that far. It was terminated by EUDP d. June 17, 2014. due to defalting milestones and prohibitive cooperation problems. The following results were obtained:

Inverter technology for solar cells were enriched with conceptual considerations of flexibility market and how technology must adapt to flexible market. Smart Outdoor lighting demonstration in Kalundborg was highly successful, with good technical operating experience and had a positive citizen feedback.
Smart Home technology proved to be a key technology in relation to monitoring the customer, aggregating and activate customers' appliances. Flexible Price signals turned out to be a prerequisite for a dynamic market environment where management of consumption and handling of supply / demand of production to play together.

Various concepts are tested for flexible prices and tariffs, and on the basis of the project, it continues with the necessary development towards a market maturation of smart price products with flexibility elements
