4M Centre - Mechanisms, Materials, Manufacturing and Management – Interdisciplinary Fundamental Research to Promote commercialization of HT-PEMFC

High temperature polymer fuel cells hold a large potential as they are simpler than traditional cells. Denmark holds a strong position in this field, however further research and development is required to improve efficiency, life span and price if this technology is to break through. The 4M-Center is established to strengthen this research in Denmark.
Project description
4M-Center will become a leading international research center in the area of polymer fuel cells (PEMFC), which are expected to play a significant role in the future energy system, as they are flexible and thus a good supplement to especially renewable energy sources. PEMFC-fuel cells working at high temperatures (120-200 °C) are a relatively new area holding great potential, since these cells neither require highly purified fuels, nor moisture control. Thus, they can be constructed easier and more simply than traditional cells. Denmark holds a strong position in this field, however futher research and development is needed to increase effect, durability and price, in order for the technology to break through. This requires focus along the entire value chain from design of materials and components to characterization and modeling and on to diagnostics of cells and cell stacks.
