Predictive Corrosion Monitoring System

The vision of the present project is an online Predictive Corrosion Monitoring System (PCMS) that through measurements of few, significant flue gas components can predict and hence optimise the corrosion rate of superheaters in Waste-to-Energy (WtE) boilers in order to increase steam data and thereby the efficiency of power production of plants.
Project description
The purpose of the project is on the basis of practical in-situ measurements of corrosion rates and on-line combustion gas analysis to develop an algorithm being the heart of an online Predictive Corrosion Monitoring System (PCMS). The PCMS must be able of predicting the rate of corrosion of superheaters in WtE boilers on the basis of information about steam temperature and flue gas composition. The PCMS will on existing WtE plants make it possible to optimise the overall operational conditions and avoid critical situations (incl. unwanted types of waste) to give minimal corrosion thereby making it possible to increase the steam temperature and pressure and hence the efficiency of the power production. The PCMS will supply information making it possible to predict the residual service life of superheaters and avoid unexpected and expensive shutdowns. The PCMS will warn about inexpedient conditions during transitory operation and unwanted types of waste and through that promote better operation.New plants could be equipped with optimal (cheaper) superheater materials given that an in-stalled PCMS will optimise the operational conditions to mini-mise the corrosion rate complying with the resistibility of the material.
