PEMCFD - Development of a model for PEM fuel cells

The proposed project deals with the finalization of a computational model to simulate heat and mass transfer processes inside PEMFC that has been developed over the past years at the Aalborg University. Experiments will be conducted in collaboration with Hydrogen South Africa in order to validate the modelling tool with world leading capabilities.
Project description
Over the past years our fuel cell research group at the Department of Energy Technology, Aalborg University, as developed a computational model to simulate heat and mass transfer processes inside Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFC). This model needs to be finalized in order to predict the fuel cell performance under dry and wet operating conditions. Once this model is finalized it will be validated with experiments conducted in part in collaboration with the competence center Hydrogen South Africa - Catalysis, located at the University of Cape Town. Such validation experiments will include the fuel cell water balance and the cell performance for different operating conditions and cell geometries.
